Everton's director of football Marcel Brands reveals that he has held discussions with captain Seamus Coleman over a coaching role when his playing career finishes.

Everton's director of football Marcel Brands has revealed that discussions have been held with Seamus Coleman over potentially keeping the defender at the club when his career finishes.

Everton's captain has made 344 appearances for the club across all competitions, but will be out of contract in June 2022 as things stand.

The Ireland international has played 25 games for the Toffees this season, but it is suggested that Everton are looking for a new right-back, meaning his game-time could potentially be limited next season.

Brands revealed to an Everton USA live event for American fans that he is in talks with Coleman about a coaching role with the club when his playing career is over: "I'm now already in talks with him to get him involved in, let's say, things off the pitch.

"I really like to use former players, especially with for example the likes of Leighton [Baines] and Seamus. They have so much experience, they love the club, they know the club, they know what's necessary at Goodison. I will do everything to keep these guys on board to help me to move the club forward.

"He's not only a fantastic player but a great character in the dressing room, a great professional. He's definitely someone I really want to keep in the club after he finishes his career. He's a great example for everyone."

Coleman may follow the footsteps of former teammate Leighton Baines, who is now the professional development coach for the Everton Academy.
