Mats Hummels, Lukas Podolski back for Germany's quarter-final with France

Germany will have Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski available again for their World Cup quarter-final against France, after both men missed the win over Algeria.

Germany should have both Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski available again for their World Cup quarter-final against France in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

Arsenal forward Podolski missed the nervy last-16 victory over Algeria with a thigh strain, while Hummels was forced to sit out in Porto Alegre with flu, but both took part in Germany's training session on Wednesday.

The Borussia Dortmund defender has revealed on Twitter that he is nearly back to 100% fitness, and will likely take up his usual position at centre-half, alongside Per Mertesacker, when they face Les Bleus at the Maracana, with Jerome Boateng shifting to right-back to replace the injured Shkodran Mustafi.

Podolski is back in contention, but is not certain to start as he competes with Mario Gotze and Chelsea attacker Andre Schurrle, who opened the scoring in extra time against Algeria, for a spot on the left wing.

The match will be Germany's first against France at a major tournament in 28 years, when they won 2-1 in the semi-finals of the 1986 World Cup.
