Germany booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals with a narrow 2-1 win over Algeria after extra time. The African side gave a good account of themselves, but in the end the quality of Germany shone through.

GERMANY

Goal

Manuel Neuer: Made an early mistake that almost let Islam Slimani in, but aside from that he put in a fine performance sweeping up behind the defence. (8/10)

Defence

Shkodran Mustafi: It is obvious that right-back is not his most comfortable position, but despite some less than impressive crossing he did not shy away and was always an option for the pass. (7/10)

Per Mertesacker: Made a couple of good tackles, particularly in the first half, but was not always comfortable alongside the more attack-minded Jerome Boateng. His lack of speed almost got him in trouble. (7/10)

Jerome Boateng: At times put defending second to pushing high up the pitch to help with the attack, but was never caught out at the back in a strong performance. (8/10)

Benedikt Howedes: Although he pushed high into the Algeria half, his lack of natural attacking tendencies meant that he did not get involved going forward all that much. Solid defensively. (7/10)

Midfield

Bastian Schweinsteiger: The midfield general that he always is. He did not get forward as much as against the USA, but hardly lost the ball all game long. (8/10)

Philipp Lahm: Played a slightly different role dropping into the defence and was effective enough, although slightly rash with his tackling on a couple of occasions. (7/10)

Mesut Ozil: Played better than he has done so far this tournament, but was clearly a player lacking in confidence with a second-half miss and a strange pass back to Schurrle instead of a shot just before his goal. (7/10)

Toni Kroos: Kept things ticking over from the number 10 role and came close two or three times with shots. Tidy on the ball, but lacked a clinical edge. (7/10)

Mario Gotze: Played in midfield rather as a false nine this time, and was the least effective of all Germany's attacking players, leading to his being replaced at the break. (6/10)

Attack

Thomas Muller: Is never as effective from the centre of attack and it was proven again as he was not able to make his dangerous late runs. Might have scored twice or more, but finishing was surprisingly off. (7/10)

Substitutes

Andre Schurrle: Came on at the break for Gotze and completely changed the game. His threat was more direct, with runs at the defence, and capped his performance with a superb back-heel finish to open the scoring. (9/10)

Sami Khedira: Came into the midfield to replace right-back Mustafi and had a good game. Did not make a mistake, but did not impact the result either. (7/10)

ALGERIA

Goal

Rais M'Bohli: Was the best player on the pitch, along with Schurrle. He stopped everything that was thrown at him in the 90 minutes, with the highlight a quite brilliant double-save in the first half. (9/10)

Defence

Aissa Mandi: Did not have a great deal of impact on the game, but the fact that Gotze was quiet on his flank in the first half goes in his favour. (7/10)

Essaid Belkalem: Was not the starting centre-back to begin the World Cup, but showed why he has been trusted with another strong performance. Not a lot got past him. (8/10)

Rafik Halliche: Halliche's performance hardly merited ending on the losing team as the captain threw everything at the cause, which led to being forced off with a third bout of cramp. Was a mountain at the heart of Algeria's defence. (9/10)

Faouzi Ghoulam: Did not stop running down the left flank all game and his crossing was excellent. He even had time to make one or two tackles as the last man. (8/10)

Midfield

Medhi Lacen: Drifted in and out of the game and was probably the quietest of the Algerian midfielders, but kept his shape and discipline well off the ball. (6/10)

Mehdi Mostefa: Was the most defensive-minded of Algeria's midfielders, and was certainly better intercepting and clearing than he was passing, but overall a good showing. (7/10)

Saphir Taider: Was one of his side's best performers in an excellent first half, but faded quickly in the second and was replaced with 15 minutes left. (7/10)

El Arbi Hillel Soudani: Combined really well with Ghoulam down the left, but his crossing was not as good as the full-back's. Made the wrong decision once or twice with his passing. (7/10)

Sofiane Feghouli: Had a fair bit of joy on the right flank when cutting inside Howedes, but his crossing was disappointing on too many occasions. (7/10)

Attack

Islam Slimani: At times was feeding off scraps, but did plenty with them. Was very dangerous on the break and, but for some good last-ditch defending, might have been through a few times. (8/10)

Substitutes

Madjid Bougherra: Came on for stricken captain Halliche and slotted into a similar role comfortably. Might have done better with a header at the other end. (6/10)

Yacine Brahimi: Showed plenty of promise when coming on with 15 minutes of normal time remaining. Had some really good touches in pockets of space and was creative with his passing. (7/10)
