Massimiliano Allegri pays tribute to departing Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon

Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri pays tribute to departing goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon following his final game for the club on Saturday.

Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri has paid tribute to Gianluigi Buffon following the goalkeeper's final game for the club.

The 40-year-old, who will be leaving the Turin club at the end of the season, was substituted in the 63rd minute of Saturday's 2-1 win against Hellas Verona at the Juventus Arena.

Buffon struggled to hold back tears as he was given a standing ovation by the crowd and a guard of honour by his Juve teammates and club staff.

"Today it was right that Gigi Buffon was honoured for all he did, there was no better way to finish this year," Allegri is quoted by BT Sport as saying.

"I was moved by him – in these four years [that Allegri has been Juve boss] I saw him doing impressive things and he deserved a goodbye like that. There was a wonderful atmosphere."

Buffon moved to Juve from Parma for £32.6m in 2001, which stood as a world-record fee for a goalkeeper until Manchester City signed Ederson in 2017.
