Lazio's Stefano Mauri handed six-month match-fixing ban

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri is handed a six-month ban for failure to report match-fixing in May 2011.

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri has been handed a six-month ban by the Italian Football Federation for his involvement in match-fixing two years ago.

Mauri was under investigation for claims that he failed to report the sabotage of two Lazio matches in 2011 - 4-2 victories in successive weeks over Genoa and Lecce.

FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi found the 33-year-old guilty of the charges, recommending a four-year ban as suitable punishment.

Pallazzi also wanted Lazio, Genoa and Lecce to receive points deductions in Serie A next season, but all parties have eventually received softer sentences.

Mauri will be banned for six months, with Lazio fined £26,400 for their involvement.

Former Portsmouth defender Alessandro Zamperini has picked up a two-year suspension for his part in the plot, with Stefano Ferrario, Carlo Gervasoni and Mario Cassano also facing enforced time on the sidelines.

Omar Milanetto, Massimiliano Benassi and Antonio Rosati were all cleared of any wrongdoing by the FIGC, and are free to start the 2013-14 campaign for their respective sides.
