Kenny Dalglish: Jay Spearing can step up in Lucas absence

Kenny Dalglish says that Jay Spearing can replace injured midfielder Lucas.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has said that Jay Spearing has the ability to step up in place of injured midfielder Lucas Leiva.

The Brazilian was ruled out for the rest of the season after scans revealed that he had damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. However, Dalglish believes that 23-year-old Spearing has enough talent to step into the role and make it his own.

"Wee Jay has done really well since I came in," said Dalglish. "We trust in him and believe in him. As long as he keeps giving what he has got to give, then he will be fine.

"Young players will not always make the right decision but we are there to prepare them all week. As long as their heart is in the right place, that's the main thing.

"Injuries are one of the tests you get at a football club. Someone's always going to be missing. It's why we have a strong squad."

Liverpool could start Spearing as early as their Monday night trip to Craven Cottage.
