Steven Gerrard wants England captaincy

Liverpool skipper Steve Gerrard admits that he would jump at the chance to captain England on a regular basis.

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would be "delighted" and "proud" to take over the captaincy of England.

John Terry was recently stripped of the accolade by the Football Association pending his trial on racial abuse charges.

Gerrard, who has been heavily linked with succeeding Terry, has insisted that he would jump at the opportunity to lead out his country on a regular basis.

"If I get offered it, I'll take it and I'll be delighted and I'll be very proud to take it," he told BBC Sport.

"But it's not my decision. It's down to, first of all, who Stuart Pearce wants to lead the team out, then whoever gets the job full time. But I want to be England captain."

Gerrard skippered England during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
