Steven Gerrard wants number of foreign players in England halved

Steven Gerrard backs FA chairman Greg Dyke to try to halve the number of foreign players in England.

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard believes that the number of foreign players playing for clubs in the country should be halved.

Concerns over the development of the English game were raised by Football Association chairman Greg Dyke last month when he claimed that too many foreign players in the Premier League are stifling the progress of England.

Gerrard, who will lead England against Montenegro in a World Cup qualifier tomorrow, has now backed Dyke's stance.

"Greg is trying to put a structure in place to improve the statistics and credit to him," Gerrard said in a press conference.

"I read something about him trying to half the number of foreigners allowed in the country and I think that is a good start."

Dyke has set up a commission aiming to improve the development of English football.
