Jordan Henderson: 'We need to step up when Steven Gerrard leaves Liverpool'

Jordan Henderson urges his Liverpool teammates to "step up" when Steven Gerrard leaves the club in the summer.

Jordan Henderson has urged his teammates to fill the void that will be left by Steven Gerrard when the captain leaves Liverpool this summer.

Gerrard played his final game at Anfield for the Reds on Saturday, but it ended in a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The 34-year-old, who will join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in July, has been the arguably the team's most influential figure for almost a decade, but Henderson believes that he and his teammates can cope without their skipper.

"I think we have to be excited about [next season]," The Express quotes Henderson as saying. "I feel we have a lot of young talent with a lot of potential.

"Stevie will be a huge loss, not only as a player and leader but also as a person around the place and everything he stands for, but that is up to us as team to step up and hopefully have a good season next time.

"It is the responsibility of the team, on and off the field, now. In terms of everything he stood for and he did for team - that's up to us to find how we can improve now."

Henderson is widely expected to be named captain by manager Brendan Rodgers for next season.
