Kevin Nolan thinks that ex-teammate Andy Carroll is "determined" to become a "top player" at Liverpool.

West Ham United midfielder Kevin Nolan has backed former Newcastle United teammate Andy Carroll to be a success at Liverpool.

The 22-year-old has had a difficult start to his career on Merseyside, netting just four goals in 19 appearances and being relegated to the bench by Kenny Dalglish for a number of matches.

While there have been fears that the frontman is feeling pressure to perform due to his £35m price tag, Nolan, who housed Carroll while he was on bail for assault, believes that he will come good at Anfield.

"The way he is, he's determined to make sure he'll be a success at Liverpool," Nolan told Sky Sports News. "Speaking to him regularly I'm sure he will be [successful] because his hard work and determination to be a top player is fantastic."

Carroll is in contention to feature for the Reds' Premier League clash against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
