Brendan Rodgers: 'Garry Monk will be a good manager'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers backs Garry Monk to succeed in his new role at Swansea City.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed club captain Garry Monk to succeed at Swansea City after being named as Michael Laudrup's replacement for the foreseeable future.

Laudrup was sacked by Swansea on Tuesday following a difficult run of form which has left them just two points above the relegation zone and Rodgers, who managed Monk during his time at the Liberty Stadium, believes that the 34-year-old has the qualities to steer the club to safety.

"It's always sad when a manager loses his job - and Michael has done an excellent job - but they feel they have had to make a change," Rodgers told BBC Sport.

"He was a wonderful captain for me - very loyal, very generous as a skipper - and I have got every confidence that, in time, he's going to be a manager.

"Garry is going to be a very good manager."

Oscar Garcia and Luis Enrique have been rumoured as possible long-term appointments but Monk is expected to be given a chance to prove he is the right man for the job.
