Liverpool are allegedly making progress in their effort to hand a new long-term deal to one of their key attackers.

Liverpool are reportedly making progress in their efforts to finalise a new contract with Luis Diaz.

For a number of months, much of the speculation surrounding the club's attackers has been regarding the future of Mohamed Salah, who has less than 12 months remaining on his existing terms.

As it stands, the Egypt international is continuing to star for the Merseyside giants while reports persist that he is interested in penning a new deal.

Nevertheless, there are other players who need their respective situations resolving in due course, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk also falling into that category.

While Diaz is not necessarily regarded as a high priority by Liverpool's board, he is now approaching the halfway point of his five-and-a-half year contract.

Diaz to receive reward for form?

According to Rousing the Kop, Liverpool are making a concerted effort to extend Diaz's terms past the end of 2026-27.

The report suggests progress is being made in negotiations between the relevant parties, despite previous suggestions that an eventual move to Barcelona could be in the offing.

That was on the player's representatives side, rather than Diaz, but leaving his contract without a renewal would inevitably lead to continued speculation.

Diaz has been largely impressive since his switch from Porto in January 2022, contributing 29 goals and 14 assists from his 104 appearances in all competitions.

He only missed one Premier League fixture last season, highlighting his importance to the team, and the Colombia international has started this campaign in impressive style.

Diaz the match-winner

In three of Liverpool's five top-flight encounters during 2024-25, he has recorded two goal or assist contributions.

As well as providing one of each in a 2-0 triumph over Brentford, Diaz scored twice in the 3-0 win at Manchester United which followed.

On Saturday, the 27-year-old backed up those efforts with two goals in the 3-0 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield, his numbers being racked up in just 361 minutes of action.
