RB Leipzig would reportedly prefer to retain the services of Fabio Carvalho, despite the Liverpool playmaker struggling for game time during his loan spell.

RB Leipzig reportedly tell Liverpool that they would like to keep Fabio Carvalho on loan for the remainder of the season.

Despite making a promising start to his Liverpool career during 2022-23, Carvalho soon saw his game time reduced by Jurgen Klopp.

With just five of his 21 appearances being starts in the Premier League and Champions League, and the Portugal Under-21 international barely featuring in the second half of the campaign, the decision was made to facilitate a loan exit.

As expected, Carvalho generated substantial interest, but Liverpool allowed the 21-year-old to link up with Leipzig for 2023-24.

However, the temporary stint with the Bundesliga giants is not working out as planned with just two starts and 10 substitute outings being made in all competitions.

One of those starts was in the Champions League dead-rubber against Young Boys on Wednesday night, with Carvalho completing the 90 minutes but failing to make an impact.

That outing came in the hours after it was alleged that Liverpool were unhappy with his stint in Germany and were keen to instigate a recall in January.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Leipzig have contacted Carvalho's parent club to reiterate that he remains an important part of Marco Rose's squad.

Leipzig are said to be keen to retain Carvalho's services for the remainder of the campaign, with the assumption being that he will be presented with more opportunities.

Nevertheless, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are reportedly undeterred in their stance that they will be activating a recall clause at the turn of the year.

Carvalho has made just 10 starts in club football since helping Fulham earn promotion from the Championship in 2021-22, chipping in with 10 goals and eight assists from 36 appearances during that particular season.

With Carvalho holding a contract until 2027, Liverpool had wanted to see him become a regular starter, but that will seemingly occur elsewhere in due course.

A wide array of clubs in the Premier League and European football's major leagues are now expected to express an interest, although Liverpool will likely select a club that will see Carvalho play on a weekly basis.
