Brendan Rodgers confirms Daniel Sturridge contract talks

Daniel Sturridge is in talks with Liverpool over a new contract, manager Brendan Rodgers announces.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the club are in "ongoing" talks with striker Daniel Sturridge over a new contract.

The 25-year-old joined the Reds from Chelsea last year, making a huge impression at Anfield in his first full season by scoring 21 goals in the Premier League.

Sturridge has suffered an injury-plagued start to the current campaign, and was today omitted from England's squad for this month's Euro 2016 qualifying fixtures against San Marino and Estonia.

There is still a chance of the striker being fit enough to play against West Bromwich Albion this weekend, however, with Rodgers refusing to rule him out during his pre-match press conference.

"We will have to wait and see," the Liverpool manager told reporters, before adding that "talks with his representatives are ongoing".

The Merseyside outfit are currently 14th in the Premier League table following an indifferent start to the campaign.
