Phil Thompson expects Steven Gerrard stay at Liverpool

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson believes that Steven Gerrard will sign a contract extension at Anfield.

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has backed current skipper Steven Gerrard to sign a new deal with the club.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to pen an extension with the Reds.

Despite some concern over his future, Thompson is confident that the 34-year-old will end his playing career at Anfield before becoming part of the coaching staff.

"I think he is more than happy, I think he will remain at Liverpool for at least 12 months, and I would quite imagine that if he wants to, he will remain in a very high level on the coaching staff," he told Sky Sports News.

Gerrard was on the scoresheet last night as Liverpool earned a 3-1 win at Leicester City in the Premier League.
