Liverpool are reportedly planning a move to bring Xabi Alonso back to the club.

Xabi Alonso could reportedly be set for a return to Liverpool.

The Real Madrid midfielder is yet to agree a contract extension with the Liga champions and Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is monitoring the situation closely, according to Spanish publication AS.

The former Liverpool star's contract with Madrid runs out in 2014 and he is thought to be keen to see who replaces Jose Mourinho at the end of the season, should the Portuguese coach leave Madrid as expected, before committing to the club.

The Reds are keen to capitalise on the uncertainty and feel that they could attract the 31-year-old World Cup winner after he recently stated he still thought of himself as a fan of the club.

Alonso moved from Liverpool to Los Blancos in 2009.
