Steven Gerrard backs Raheem Sterling for World Cup spot

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard believes that winger Raheem Sterling is playing well enough to earn a spot at the World Cup in the summer.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard believes that teammate Raheem Sterling has moved himself into contention for a place at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Sterling has been one of the star performers as Liverpool attempt to mount a challenge for the Premier League title, and Gerrard has indicated that he would be surprised not to see the winger feature for England in June.

The 33-year-old told the Liverpool Echo: "Raheem has been in great form over the last couple of months and I'm sure that Roy Hodgson is watching him very closely.

"The Arsenal game was an unbelievable performance from a guy of that age. I was just disappointed that he didn't go on to get his hat-trick.

"His form of late has been sensational and if he continues that until the end of the season, we will see him at the World Cup."

Sterling, who has made one appearance for England, has scored six times in 23 matches for the Merseyside club this season.
