Manchester City set a new European record for English clubs after claiming a milestone 3-0 victory over Young Boys at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Manchester City have set a new European record for English clubs after claiming a milestone 3-0 victory over Young Boys at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Erling Haaland scored twice either side of a strike from Phil Foden to help the Citizens qualify for the last 16 for the 11th successive season and maintain their 100% record in Group G.

Goal machine Haaland opened the scoring in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot, before Foden doubled the hosts' advantage on the stroke of half time with a brilliant solo goal.

Six minutes into the second half, Haaland netted his second and City's third of the night when he arrowed a 20-yard strike into the top corner, increasing his overall goal tally for the season to 15 in 17 games across all competitions, before Sandro Lauper was dismissed for two bookable offenses.

The Champions League holders eventually eased to a routine win on home soil and have extended their unbeaten run in Europe to 18 games – a new record for English clubs and the fifth-longest run of any side since the Champions League era began in 1992.

Man City have surpassed the previous record set by last season's Europa Conference League winners West Ham United, who saw their 17-game unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of Olympiacos in the Europa League group stage last month.

In addition, success over Young Boys helped Pep Guardiola's side hit another landmark in the club's rise on the European stage, as they have racked up 100 Champions League victories in the second-quickest time by an English club, reaching the milestone after 183 matches.

Liverpool are the fastest English team to win 100 times in Europe, doing so after 170 games, while Man City have narrowly edged ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who required 184 fixtures to reach a century of continental victories.

Fifty-two of Man City's 100 European wins have come under the tutelage of Guardiola, who successfully steered the club to a historic treble and their first-ever Champions League triumph last season.

Guardiola's predecessor Manuel Pellegrini claimed 13 European wins in charge of the Citizens, while Joe Mercer, Roberto Mancini (11 each), Mark Hughes (seven), Tony Book (four) and Kevin Keegan (two) also led City to victory in Europe.

Man City have reached triple figures for wins in Europe across three different competitions, with 68 taking place in the Champions League, 21 in the Europa League/UEFA Cup and 11 in the Cup Winners' Cup which the Citizens lifted back in 1969-70.

Guardiola and co will return to Premier League action on Sunday when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, and will endeavour to maintain their position at the top of the table in their final game before the international break.
