How Manchester City could line up against Newcastle United

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final clash with Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Manchester City will look to strengthen their grip on one trophy in the week they relinquished their hold of another when they face Newcastle United in an FA Cup quarter-final at St James' Park on Sunday.

City's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Thursday night officially saw them surrender the Premier League title to Liverpool with seven games of the season remaining.

However, they are still FA Cup holders and could still end the campaign with three cups to their name, but only if they bounce back with victory over the Magpies this weekend.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Pep Guardiola could line his side up for the contest.

Guardiola was bluffing somewhat when he suggested that he might name a weakened team against Chelsea, although with the strength in depth available to him he is still able to make a number of changes for this match and still field a strong XI.

The FA Cup is the only tangible thing City have left to fight for until the Champions League returns in August, and so they are likely to go all out for success.

Guardiola's options are slightly limited by injury doubts and absentees, though, with Fernandinho suspended following his red card against Chelsea and Sergio Aguero out for the foreseeable future after undergoing an operation on his knee.

John Stones, Phil Foden, Claudio Bravo and Eric Garcia - all of whom would have been hopeful of starting roles in a cup match - all remain doubtful, with Garcia the most likely of those to recover having now been through the required length of absence for concussion.

There could be a first start of the season for Leroy Sane despite his desire to leave the club this summer, while Bernardo Silva, who has four goals and four assists in his last 10 FA Cup games, will also hope to be included again.

Gabriel Jesus was named on the bench at Stamford Bridge but has a sensational record in the FA Cup, scoring seven goals and creating four more in just nine such outings.

The desire to win the competition and keep their treble hopes alive could mean another start for the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri, while David Silva could come back into the fold.
