Manchester City stunned by Middlesbrough

Patrick Bamford scores the winner as Middlesbrough earn a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in their FA Cup fourth-round tie at the Etihad.

Manchester City have been dumped out of the FA Cup this afternoon, falling to a 2-0 defeat in their fourth-round tie against Middlesbrough.

The hosts dominated from the kickoff and they threatened early on when a low cross from Jesus Navas had to be parried away from danger by Tomas Mejias.

Moments later City had a shout for a penalty when Stevan Jovetic went down under a challenge from Adam Clayton, but the referee waved away their appeals.

Sergio Aguero was being kept quiet by the Boro defence, but the Argentine showed his threat when he won the ball just outside the box and drilled a strike into the side netting.

City were in complete control and Aleksandar Kolarov saw his effort from a tight angle beaten away, before a low drive from Jovetic was parried by Mejias.

Dedryck Boyata should have found the net on the half-hour mark when he blasted over following a corner and James Milner saw an attempt pushed behind as the hosts continued to dominate.

Mejias was being kept busy and he was again called into again to turn David Silva's deflected strike behind for a corner.

City were unable to make the breakthrough before half time and they created the first chance after the break when Jovetic saw his header saved.

Despite all of City's pressure, they were caught out in the 53rd minute as the Championship side took a shock lead.

A poor back pass from Fernando put Willy Caballero in trouble and Albert Adomah took advantage to poke the ball goalwards.

His effort was blocked on the line by Fernando, but the Brazilian's clearance cannoned off the arriving Patrick Bamford and flew into the net.

The visitors almost doubled their lead minutes later as Lee Tomlin's shot was saved by Caballero, with Grant Leadbitter seeing his effort from the rebound blocked.

Middlesbrough continued to pose a threat and after latching onto a ball over the top, Adomah chipped a strike into the gloves of the keeper.

City were in disarray at the back and they were inches away from going further behind as Tomlin worked some space on the edge of the box, before crashing a strike against the inside of the post.

The hosts were struggling to create any clear opportunities and Aguero was unable to make clean contact after being played through in by Silva.

Boro were looking especially threatening on the counter attack and after a quick break Jelle Vossen saw his volley at the far post beaten away by Caballero.

In the final minute City almost found an equaliser, but Frank Lampard's deflected strike from outside the box looped onto the post.

City kept pushing forward in search of a goal, but they were caught out for the second time as Kike slid an effort into the corner to wrap up a famous win for the visitors.
