Manchester City challenge the red card that was handed to the captain Vincent Kompany during yesterday's Manchester derby.

Manchester City have lodged an appeal with the Football Association against the red card that was handed to Vincent Kompany yesterday afternoon.

The City skipper was given his marching orders by referee Chris Foy for a two-footed challenge on Manchester United winger Nani.

City manager Roberto Mancini refused to comment on the decision at the time, although he has since accused United striker Wayne Rooney of trying to get Kompany red-carded for his reaction to the tackle.

The FA have acknowledged City's challenge to the verdict and have confirmed that the hearing will be held prior to the club's Carling Cup semi-final tie with Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

Kompany faces a three-match suspension if the appeal proves to be unsuccessful.
