Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirms that captain Vincent Kompany will lift any trophies the team win this season, despite only playing a bit-part role.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that captain Vincent Kompany will lift whatever trophies his side win this season, despite only playing a bit-part role in the campaign so far.

Kompany has once again been blighted by injuries this term, with the 31-year-old making just 11 appearances across all competitions and falling down the pecking order behind the likes of Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and January arrival Aymeric Laporte.

City remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple this season and, despite the likes of Fernandinho and David Silva wearing the armband for much of the campaign, Guardiola confirmed that Kompany would have the honour of lifting any silverware.

"We have to wait for Vincent to lift the titles. If Vincent doesn't lift the titles, we will have good memories for ourselves," Guardiola is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

"We cannot deny we have enjoyed these six, seven months a lot. But to be admired, to be loved, to get credit for what we have done, you have to lift the titles.

"I cannot deny the distance to the next team (in the Premier League). Today it is 16 points, tomorrow it could be 13. There is still a lot to play for, but I don't know what will happen. But yes, to have 72 points in February, it's a lot.

"It is what it is, but we are playing in the right way. If we are able to keep it up all of the season, I don't know what will happen, but for the opponents it will be tough."

In addition to being 16 points clear in the Premier League, City are also in the FA Cup fifth round, the EFL Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League.
