Former Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook admits the club were right not to spend big money in the transfer market last summer.

Former Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook feels that the club's owners were right not to spend big money in the transfer market last summer.

City missed out on targets such as Robin van Persie as chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak refused to sanction any big-money signings, leaving the Italian to bemoan his situation.

"It's difficult to say because I wasn't familiar with the inner workings but I probably would have held tight," Cook told talkSPORT.

"There were a lot of players in the team that had only just started to gel and come together. But Roberto always wants to go that extra step and get better and there's nothing wrong with that."

City face off against Manchester United in their derby clash later this evening.
