David de Gea: 'I need to play well consistently to keep Spain spot'

Manchester United's David de Gea says that he needs to perform at a consistent high level if he is to secure his place as Spain's number one goalkeeper for Euro 2016.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has revea;ed that he is determined to keep performing at a consistently high level in order to secure the number one position for Spain at next summer's Euro 2016 finals in France.

The 24-year-old has emerged as Vicente del Bosque's first choice in recent seasons, edging out former Real Madrid shot-stopper Iker Casillas.

De Gea proved his ability on Monday night by making a number of crucial saves in Spain's 1-0 win over Ukraine in their final Euro 2016 qualifier.

"I try to play at my highest level all the time and I want to make it difficult for the coach to choose his number one goalkeeper ahead of the Euros," De Gea told TVE.

"I want to stay at the level I was at last season, which I think was very high. It's difficult to stay consistent, but I want to continue growing and improving."

De Gea was close to joining Madrid on the final day of the transfer window in the summer, but after paperwork was not filed before the deadline, the Spaniard signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.
