Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero is ruled out of the World Cup due to "a joint blockage in his right knee" suffered in training on Tuesday.

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero will play no part in Argentina's World Cup campaign after being ruled out of the competition with a knee injury.

The 31-year-old was named in La Albiceleste's original 23-man squad on Monday after recently recovering from a separate problem.

Romero was in contention to feature in his side's opening fixture against Iceland on June 16, having been an ever-present during the qualifying campaign.

However, the Argentine Football Association has now revealed that the United keeper is out of action for an unspecified amount of time because of an injury picked up in training on Tuesday.

"Sergio Romero suffered today a joint blockage in his right knee that will leave him out of the squad," a statement read.

Willy Caballero and Franco Armani, of Chelsea and River Plate respectively, were the other two stoppers named in Argentina's original squad.
