Jamie Carragher: 'Wayne Rooney a problem for Manchester United'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher questions whether Wayne Rooney deserves to be an automatic pick in the Manchester United XI this season.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Wayne Rooney deserves to be an automatic pick in the Manchester United first XI this season.

Rooney's performances for both club and country have been under the spotlight over the last couple of seasons, but the 30-year-old is still seen as a key player for the Red Devils and indeed England.

Carragher, speaking ahead of Monday's Premier League clash between Sunderland and Everton, has claimed that Man United have "better options" in the positions that Rooney, who has started the season as a number 10, wants to occupy.

"I think Wayne Rooney has a problem at Man United. I think there are better options in the positions that he wants to play," Carragher told Sky Sports News.

Rooney is currently second behind Bobby Charlton in the all-time scoring charts at Man United, with the forward hitting 246 goals in 525 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Everton in 2004.
