Michael Carrick: "Competition for place is good"

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick insists that "competition for places is good" after the club signed Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Michael Carrick has insisted that "competition for places is good" following the arrival of midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin at Manchester United.

The two new signings are expected to compete with the England international, who missed much of last season with ankle and calf injuries, for playing time in Louis van Gaal's side.

The 33-year-old told MUTV: "Competition for places is good. Over the years there has always been competition for places at this club.

"As players, you want the best players here and you want the squad to be as strong as possible and challenging for everything we're involved and, to do that, you need the best players and the strength in depth.

"The four lads that have come in have got quality and they've settled in quite quickly. I think this is a welcoming and friendly group and we're looking forward to getting to know them a bit better."

United have also signed Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian this summer.
