Ander Herrera confused by Alexis Sanchez struggles at Manchester United

Ander Herrera, formerly of Manchester United, says that he has "no explanation" for why Alexis Sanchez has struggled during his time at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has claimed that he remains mystified as to why Alexis Sanchez has not been a success at Old Trafford.

Despite having been tipped to help United back into contention for the Premier League title, Sanchez netted just three goals in 32 top-flight outings before being loaned out to Inter Milan last summer.

Herrera, who now plies his trade for Paris Saint-Germain, has acknowledged that he has "no explanation" for the Chile international's struggles at United, which began when he left Arsenal in January 2019.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Spaniard said: "Sometimes, in football, there is no explanation for every single thing that happens. Alexis is one of them. He came from Arsenal. He used to win games by himself for Arsenal.

"I remember watching him because Arsenal were our rivals for titles and the top four. I saw them losing games 2-0 and Alexis would score two and they'd win the game. He'd score the winning goal.

"It shows football sometimes has no explanation. How can a player, who one month before, two months before, is the best player by far in a big team like Arsenal, then he comes to United and he doesn't perform? I have no explanation."

Sanchez has also failed to regain his form at San Siro, netting just once in all competitions this season.
