Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari has insisted that the club's board must give Sir Alex Ferguson transfer funds to spend this summer.
United were denied a 20th title on Sunday when rivals Manchester City scored twice in the final moments to beat Queens Park Rangers, and Macari has called on the club to invest.
"As this season's unfolded I've got to take the view that Ferguson does need a bit of financial support to get in the market and buy one or two players," Macari told talkSPORT.
"If anything happened to [Wayne] Rooney right away you are minus 30 odd goals over the season so you need cover there and you need cover in one or two other places.
"There is nothing like freshening things up as well. Supporters like to see new faces coming in, they like to see a bit of action, and I think this close season he is going to have to do that."
United and City finished the season level on 89 points.
