Project Restart: Merseyside derby, Tottenham vs. Man Utd among first games back

The first weekend of Premier League action after the coronavirus lockdown will see Everton face Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Tottenham take on Manchester United.

The first weekend of Premier League football after the coronavirus lockdown will see a number of high-profile matches, including the Merseyside derby and Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United.

Plans were announced earlier today for action to resume on June 17, exactly 100 days after the most recent Premier League match.

The first two games back will take place on a Wednesday, with champions Manchester City taking on Arsenal and struggling Aston Villa hosting European hopefuls Sheffield United.

Both of those matches are games in hand, meaning that the competition will be able to resume with gameweek 30 on the weekend of June 19-21.

That weekend will see Everton take on Merseyside rivals Liverpool - a match which could see Liverpool win the title if Arsenal beat Man City on the Wednesday.

However, that contest could be one of the "high risk" matches to be played at a neutral venue to avoid the risk of fans turning up regardless.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho will also face his former club, with Champions League-chasing Manchester United first up for the North Londoners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The matches will be at staggered kickoff times to ensure that all of them can be televised, as will be the case for each of the 92 remaining Premier League fixtures this season.
