Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: 'Fans' expectations are too high'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says that the fans' expectations are "much too high".

Louis van Gaal has told Manchester United supporters that their expectations are "much too high".

The North-West outfit, who have won 20 top-flight titles, failed to launch a Premier League title campaign this season.

The minimum target was top four, but they were unable to secure a Champions League spot as they finished fifth in the table following last night's 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

There was a smattering of boos directed towards Van Gaal at the end of the match, and he later addressed the fans thanking them for their "unconditional support".

However, the Dutchman has suggested that United's following need to lower their expectations.

"Of course [I understand the boos], because I have also said that the expectation is very high, especially the fans," Van Gaal told Sky Sports News.

"They are expecting a lot, but I think these expectations are much too high, and we are a team in transition, and that I have said when I started here.

"Maybe I have to bring over the message much clearer than I have done."

United still have a chance of winning silverware this season as they take on Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.
