Louis van Gaal: 'I don't like 4-4-2 system'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reveals that he does not like playing with a 4-4-2 formation and feels that 3-5-2 is the best system for his side.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he does not feel comfortable playing with a 4-4-2 formation.

The Red Devils have failed to settle on a system under Van Gaal this season due to their inconsistent displays and injuries in defence.

United have at times struggled playing in a 3-5-2 formation while having better success with a 4-4-2 system, but the Dutchman believes that the former is the best formation for his team going forward under his tenure.

Van Gaal told reporters: "We have won more with 4-4-2 in a diamond, but when you analyse the game then we have twitched on the bench. I have twitched because we were out of balance. All the matches when we play 4-4-2 like against West Ham United it was always twitching and I don't like it.

"They are still not comfortable [with 3-5-2]. That is very important that they are comfortable. I would like them to feel more comfortable. But we have to do our preparation in the season so we are doing a lot of things during the matches.

"But we have had a fantastic run of results except Southampton at home. Up to now I am pleased and we are going in the right way."

United play Cambridge United in the fourth round of the FA Cup later today.
