Bruno Fernandes did not ask to be taken off during Manchester United's 7-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday, according to a report.

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes reportedly did not ask to be substituted during their 7-0 thrashing against Liverpool on Sunday.

When Marcus Rashford was replaced by Anthony Elanga, video footage appears to show Fernandes in conversation with the bench, which led to accusations that he was asking to be taken off instead.

The accusations came in the immediate aftermath of the incident in which United were humiliated at Anfield, and Fernandes in particular was criticised heavily for his performance and body language throughout the evening.

Gary Neville, who was on commentary duties for the match, questioned the Portuguese midfielder's actions as he gestured towards the dugout while the sub took place.

However, BBC Sport have been told that Fernandes was simply asking for clarity over any tactical adjustments following the substitution.

As the captain of the side, Fernandes took the huge brunt of the blame by pundits following the game, with Roy Keane also labelling his body language as "disgraceful".

Fernandes has been almost ever-present under Erik ten Hag this season, and should take the armband again as they look to bounce back in their Europa League tie with Real Betis on Thursday, should Harry Maguire remain on the bench.
