Report: Arsenal, Manchester United eager to sign Thomas Vermaelen on loan

Arsenal and Manchester United are to face off for the chance to sign Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen on a loan deal in January, according to reports.

Arsenal and Manchester United are considering bringing Thomas Vermaelen back to England on loan to solve their defensive issues, according to reports.

The former Gunners centre-back has yet to make a single appearance for new club Barcelona since joining in the summer, due to injuries.

According to the Express, the Catalan outfit are willing to send Vermaelen out on loan for the remainder of the season in order to build up his core strength and fitness, which has alerted the Gunners and the Red Devils.

The Belgian international is expected to be out for an undetermined amount of time following a fresh injury setback at the Nou Camp.
