Ryan Giggs: Manchester United looking to sign 'proven winners'

Ryan Giggs admits that Manchester United need to "strengthen the spine" of the squad this summer in an attempt to improve on their fourth-place finish in 2014-15.

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has revealed that the club are targeting 'proven winners' in this summer's transfer window.

The Red Devils have so far strengthened in attack by bringing in PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, while bids for Sergio Ramos and Bastian Schweinsteiger have reportedly been knocked back.

Giggs admits that strengthening the spine of United's side is a priority, following on from last season's fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

"If there are players available who are winners, who are proven, then, yeah, let's go and get them," he told The Sunday Times. "And with any good team the spine is important. Midfield, striker, centre-backs, goalkeeper.

"I'm sure we'll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through. We obviously need to strengthen because we were fourth. We weren't first, second or third."

As well as showing an interest in Ramos and Schweinsteiger, United are also said to be close to landing Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
