Ryan Giggs believes that Wayne Rooney still has a role to play at Manchester United, but only if he is willing to compromise.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has claimed that there is no reason why Wayne Rooney cannot stay at Old Trafford if he is open to reducing his game time.

The 31-year-old is already familiar with bit-part roles, having started just 15 Premier League games under manager Jose Mourinho last season.

In 38 appearances in all competitions, the forward scored eight goals and produced as many assists in a season that could be his last in a United shirt.

Widespread reports have linked Rooney to the Chinese Super League, as well as his boyhood club Everton, and the man himself recently stated that he is considering offers from elsewhere.

Giggs, who played for United until he was 40, believes that Rooney can still have a career at Old Trafford as long as he is willing to make compromises.

"Wayne is a proven goalscorer, give him a chance Wayne will score," Giggs told Sky Sports News. "It is whether he can put up with not being first choice or whether he can develop his game which I had to around the same age, not being certain to play every game, but playing 25-30 games and contributing.

"If Wayne can do that then I don't see why he can't still be at the club."

The forward, who has been left out of the last two England squads, has won 12 trophies during a 13-year spell at United.
