Christian Heidel: 'Schalke 04 have reached limit with Leon Goretzka'

Schalke 04 sporting director Christian Heidel says that the German outfit "can not do more" to keep Leon Goretzka at the club past the end of this season.

Schalke 04 sporting director Christian Heidel has reiterated that the club have reached their limit when it comes to trying to keep Leon Goretzka at the Veltins-Arena.

Goretzka has just eight months remaining on his contract and with the highly-rated midfielder attracting interest from elsewhere, the German international has not shown a willingness to pen a new deal.

The 22-year-old's future remains up in the air, but Heidel has claimed that Schalke "can not do more" in their attempts to keep their star man at the club.

Heidel told Sky Sports Germany: "We have made every effort possible, we can not do more.

"We are trying to convince him, also in the economic aspect, we are convinced that we have to look for him to continue without putting pressure on him."

Liverpool and Manchester United are said to head the race for Goretzka, who has netted 18 goals in 125 appearances for Schalke in all competitions.
