Manchester United are allegedly at the head of the queue for Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg, who is on the radar of a number of England's biggest clubs.

Manchester United are reportedly at the head of the queue for Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg.

The 17-year-old has been in impressive form for the Black Cats during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring three goals in 20 appearances in all competitions, and he is viewed as one of the best young talents in English football.

According to Fichajes, Man United are leading the race for the teenager, who is said to be on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs due to his recent development.

The report claims that new Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim views him as 'the key piece' in midfield, with Rigg viewed by many to be a generational talent.

Man United's former chief scout Mick Brown recently said that the 20-time English champions have a "very good relationship" with Sunderland, placing them in a strong position to get the deal done.

Man United 'in pole position' for Rigg

"He's definitely one they're interested in," he told Football Insider. "He fits the profile of a young player who they can help develop. They've had scouts watching him closely at Sunderland nearly every week this season.

"They will know how good he is and how far they think he can go in the game, and from what I've heard they've been very impressed. Man United have a very good relationship with Sunderland behind the scenes, too.

"There are a number of young players up and down the country that they've sent scouts to watch, but Rigg's performances have been very, very impressive. I think they'll keep an eye on his progress and then determine whether they think he's ready for the step up, but all signs suggest he will be capable."

Man United 'believe' Rigg could be 'the next Roy Keane'

Man United scouts allegedly believe that Rigg could be 'the next Roy Keane', and they are looking to beat the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid to his services.

Rigg made three FA Cup appearances for Sunderland during the 2022-23 season before featuring on 22 occasions in all competitions last term.

This season, the midfielder has made 20 appearances, meaning that he already has 45 Black Cats outings to his name despite the fact that he only turned 17 in June.

How much could Rigg cost?

Sunderland are said to be unwilling to let Rigg leave unless an offer of at least £30m is received, which is unlikely to put many clubs off considering his potential.

The Black Cats are challenging for promotion to the Premier League for next season, currently sitting third in the Championship table, but Rigg is expected to leave the Stadium of Light even if the club are able to secure a return to the top flight.
