Manchester United were keen to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane before Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford, according to a report.

Manchester United were reportedly keen to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane before Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

Kane was strongly linked with Manchester City in the recent market, but the Citizens could not come to an agreement with Spurs over a transfer fee for the England captain.

According to Dagbladet, Man United also explored the possibility of signing the striker over the summer but were ultimately not prepared to meet Tottenham's asking price, which is believed to have been in the region of £160m.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side instead boosted their attacking options with the arrival of Ronaldo, who returned to the 20-time English champions after spells with Real Madrid and Juventus.

The Portugal international has scored six times in nine appearances for Man United this term, including three goals in three Champions League outings.

Ronaldo and Kane will be on opposite sides in the Premier League this weekend, as the Red Devils make the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
