Marcelino: 'Gabriel Paulista wants Villarreal stay'

Villarreal boss Marcelino admits that he is desperate to keep in-demand defender Gabriel Paulista with the Spanish club this January.

Villarreal boss Marcelino has claimed that in-demand centre-back Gabriel Paulista wants to remain with the Spanish outfit.

The 24-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this month, while Manchester United are said to be interested in the defender.

However, Marcelino is confident that the Yellow Submarine will retain Gabriel's services.

"[Gabriel] is tremendously noble and an exemplary professional. His head is here and he wants to keep demonstrating his worth here," Marcelino is quoted as saying by Inside Spanish Football.

"On a sporting level, I wouldn't like to see Gabriel leave but we have to see the opinion of the club."

Gabriel, who joined Villarreal from Vitoria in 2013, has been one of La Liga's standout performers this season.
