Kylian Mbappe reportedly has four months left to trigger a one-year extension clause in his Paris Saint-Germain contract to keep him at the club until June 2025.

Kylian Mbappe reportedly has four months left to trigger a one-year extension clause in his Paris Saint-Germain contract to keep him at the club until June 2025.

Following speculation over a potential move to Real Madrid, it was announced in May last year that the 24-year-old had put pen to paper on a new three-year deal allegedly worth around €50m (£44m) per season with a €100m (£88m) signing on bonus.

"I would like to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and of course I am delighted," Mbappe told the official PSG website.

"I am convinced that here I can continue to grow at a club that provides everything necessary to perform at the highest level. I am also delighted to continue to play in France, the country where I was born, where I have grown up and where I have made my name.

"I would like to thank the President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, for his trust, his understanding and his patience. I would also like to thank all the fans of Paris Saint-Germain, both in France and around the world, for their support, especially in recent months. Together, side by side and ambitious, we will make magic in Paris."

However, speculation has been swirling for several months over the true length of Mbappe's contract, and it is now believed that the forward instead penned a two-year contract with the option to extend by a further 12 months until June 2025.

According to L'Equipe, via Marca, Mbappe now has only four months left to exercise the option to extend his deal by an extra year.

Should the France international opt against triggering the extension clause, Mbappe will enter the 2023-24 campaign with just a year remaining on his contract and will be able to negotiate with foreign clubs over a free transfer from next January onwards.

PSG are keen for Mbappe to activate the extension clause as they intend to not have another 'busy' summer of transfer sagas with their star players.

However, recent reports have claimed that the Parisian giants would be prepared to sever ties with one of Mbappe, Lionel Messi or Neymar this summer to balance their books.

Mbappe has been in electric goalscoring form once again this season, finding the net 29 times in as many matches across all competitions, including 17 goals in 21 Ligue 1 appearances.

The forward scored a brace in PSG's 3-0 league win over Marseille last weekend, taking his overall goal tally for the club to 200 in 246 matches across all tournaments since joining the club from Monaco in 2017.

PSG are currently at risk of failing to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, as they trail 1-0 to Bayern Munich in their last-16 tie, and Mbappe has allegedly threatened to hand in a transfer request should they be eliminated.

Manchester United have recently emerged as a potential suitor for Mbappe, with one report claiming that they could launch a big-money bid to sign the Frenchman this summer should the Glazers agree to sell the club.

Real Madrid may be tempted to reignite their interest with Carlo Ancelotti expected to recruit a new centre-forward this summer, while Liverpool are also believed to be in the race for his signature.
