Roma are reportedly struggling to meet Manchester United's asking price for Chris Smalling.
Having been allowed to spend the campaign on loan at Stadio Olimpico, the centre-back has made a total of 23 starts in all competitions.
While not possessing the option to push through a permanent deal, Roma and Smalling are keen to continue working together during the next campaign.
However, according to The Express, a transfer appears unlikely at this stage due to United raising their valuation of the 30-year-old.
Despite Roma being prepared to pay £12m, it has been suggested that United value the England international at £17m.
Roma allegedly need to qualify for the Champions League in order to fund a full-time switch for Smalling.
