Peter Schmeichel hoping David de Gea signs new Manchester United deal

Peter Schmeichel is keen for Manchester United to tie goalkeeper David de Gea down to a new contract at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is hopeful that David de Gea can be convinced to sign a new contract with the club.

The Spanish keeper's current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2016, which has resulted in strong reports linking him with a return to his homeland with Real Madrid.

However, despite understanding the "attraction" held by a move back home, Schmeichel is eager for the 24-year-old to play a key role in the "rebuilding" of United.

"I have no idea what his thinking is, but I could imagine that going back home, playing in the Spanish league and being there for the national team manager to see him every week, that could be an attraction," the Dane told Sky Sports News.

"I think Manchester United has been really good to him. They stuck by him when everyone else turned their back - I'm talking about his first season.

"He's been unbelievable [this season]. Hopefully, the project that is Manchester United is something that he feels for and he wants to take part in rebuilding the club. Personally, I hope he signs a long contract."

De Gea joined United from Real's rivals Atletico Madrid in 2011 for £17.8m.
