Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is pleading with the Red Devils to allow him to leave and will happily forfeit a £1.5m payout fee, according to a report.

The Argentine finds himself behind David de Gea and Dean Henderson in the Old Trafford pecking order and was linked with a move elsewhere during the most recent transfer window, but Romero ultimately stayed put despite a lack of opportunities in Manchester.

However, the 33-year-old is believed to be desperately seeking a way out, with his current contract at United set to run until the end of the current campaign.

According to The Sun, Romero is willing to relinquish a compensation fee from the club and wants his contract at Old Trafford terminated this month, with the shot-stopper eyeing a move to the United States.

Romero was reportedly close to securing a deadline-day move to Everton, but the Toffees instead chose to sign Roma's Robin Olsen on loan.

Romero has turned out 61 times for United in all competitions since his arrival, but the South American has only made seven Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.
