Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has dropped the biggest hint yet that he will join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
The Belgian defender was thought to have been set to move to Arsenal with Manchester United also showing their interest, but the 25-year-old now seems to be on his way to White Hart Lane.
Vertonghen has encouraged the Dutch champions not to stand in the way of his departure and miss out on a big transfer fee.
Vertonghen said: "In a year from now I could leave the club for free. I hope Ajax are aware of it as the situation of Maarten Stekelenburg's transfer was very harsh. He only arrived at the end of pre-season at AS Roma. I want to flow in fluently, directly with the other Spurs players.
"Tottenham is a fantastic traditional club who play football in a way I like.
"Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players."
Spurs could still finish third above Arsenal if they can better their North London rival's result on the final weekend of the Premier League season on Sunday.
