Michael Carrick could be used as a centre-back for England on Friday.

England manager Roy Hodgson is considering using Michael Carrick in defence against San Marino on Friday.

The Three Lions find themselves short at the back following the withdrawals of Rio Ferdinand, Michael Dawson, Phil Jagielka and most recently Gary Cahill.

Joleon Lescott and Chris Smalling are in line to start the World Cup qualifier at the Serravalle Stadium on Friday, but Hodgson is mindful of his side's meeting with Montenegro on Tuesday.

Lescott is one booking away from suspension which could rule him out of the clash against the Group H leaders next week.

Hodgson does have the uncapped Steven Taylor and Steven Caulker available but both are relatively untested on the international scene.

Carrick has played in defence for Manchester United on several occasions, and Hodgson is considering using the 31-year-old as an emergency centre-back for their upcoming match.
