Sam Allardyce: 'Everything in Newcastle revolves around club'

Former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce warns Steve McClaren that he "has to manage a huge amount of expectation" at the club because the fans are so passionate.

Former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has warned new Magpies boss Steve McClaren that he "has to manage a huge amount of expectation" at the club because its fans are so passionate.

The 54-year-old signed a three-year deal at St James' Park in June this year after being fired by Championship side Derby County.

Allardyce, who managed the Magpies between 2007 and 2008, told BBC Sport: "Steve McClaren has to manage a huge amount of expectation at Newcastle.

"He understands the passion there, we all do. If you don't deliver what they want, you'll get criticised. It'll come his way somewhere along the way.

"Their fans are passionate about what they think the club should be. The history doesn't tell you that but they don't change. Their fans were exactly as they are now when I was there. Because everything around the city resolves around the club."

Newcastle currently sit 18th in the Premier League table following two draws and two defeats in their first four games.
