Eddie Howe suggests that Newcastle United's rise up the Premier League standings is their reward for 'hard work since his arrival almost a year ago.

Eddie Howe has stressed that there will be "no complacency" within his Newcastle United squad after their recent rise up the Premier League standings.

After initially drawing the majority of their opening games of the season, the Magpies have recently moved into the top four of the table.

The North East outfit have recorded four wins and a draw from their last five fixtures, their latest victory coming at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Now sitting ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, Newcastle are being tipped to challenge for Champions League qualification ahead of schedule.

Nevertheless, despite coming through 12 top-flight fixtures with 21 points and just one defeat, Howe has insisted that his squad will continue to work even harder in order to fulfil their potential.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, the Englishman said: "It is everything to us. We give everything, we work the hours we do as a coaching team, as players to win. That is our objective every week. When you are able to achieve that there is a feeling of satisfaction although albeit for me very brief before you focus on the next challenge.

"Enjoying the moment we are in but we want to keep it going as long as we can. There has been no complacency, no let up in terms of our work this week because we know how difficult the league is.

"These things never happen overnight. There is a lot of work gone in to try and implement a style of play we want to be consistent with. There is always going to be moments where that's tested and you have to improve, that will never change."

Howe has also taken the opportunity to talk up the performances of Callum Wilson, who has netted four goals from eight starts to put himself in contention for a call-up to the England squad for the World Cup.

The Newcastle boss added: "Whether it's England or Newcastle. Callum is very driven. If you look at his history and background, he has always had that. He always knew where he wanted to go in his career and I don't think that has changed.

"He has performed to a very high level for the team. Everyone knows the way we want to play and with that method of play comes a big responsibility for the number nine and he has executed that very well.

"His all round game was very good, his goal [against Tottenham] was excellent and probably underestimated how good that finish was."

Newcastle head into Saturday's fixture with Aston Villa looking to equal a streak which has lasted for 16 years.
