Newcastle United boss John Carver has hinted that he could award defender Daryl Janmaat the captaincy if he is still in charge next season.
The armband is thought to be up for grabs after current skipper Fabricio Coloccini sat out the last three games following a red card at Everton.
With vice-captain Moussa Sissoko also now suspended for his dismissal at Liverpool on Monday, Carver has hinted that the Dutchman, 25, will lead the Magpies in the visit of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Asked if he will give the armband to Janmaat, Carver told reporters: "I'd be tempted, yes, because he's a proper leader. He's got character, strength, he's good around the dressing room.
"Whatever you ask him to do, he'll do and he has a good presence around the place. He leads by example, and that's what you need a captain to do."
Janmaat - signed by former United boss Alan Pardew in the summer - has been ever present for Newcastle this season, starting all 32 of their Premier League games.
