A report claims that the Bin Zayed Group's proposed takeover of Newcastle United is not close to completion, with Rafael Benitez's departure complicating matters.

The proposed takeover of Newcastle United has reportedly stalled following Rafael Benitez's departure as manager.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is rumoured to have been in advanced talks with the Bin Zayed Group last month over a possible £350m sale.

Things have since gone quiet on that front, however, and Newcastle Chronicle claims that a deal is not close to being completed.

Benitez's exit at the end of last month following the expiration of his contract is said to have further complicated matters.

The Dubai-based group, led by Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed, are believed to have already passed the Premier League's fit and proper persons test.

Steve Bruce is the shock leading candidate to succeed Benitez at St James' Park.
